ChatGPT canvas is gone from the new models. Here's how to share the work

On 28 May 2026 OpenAI wrote that canvas is no longer available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking. Writing and coding now sit in the chat as writing blocks and code blocks. Paid users can keep using canvas on legacy models for a limited time.

What changed on 28 May 2026

OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes: “With this update, canvas will no longer be available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking. Writing and coding functionality is now supported directly in chat responses through writing blocks and code blocks. Paid users can continue using canvas for a limited time through legacy models until those models are sunset.” That is the whole change, in their words. Canvas is not gone from every model on day one, but it is gone from the new default models. The work still happens: writing blocks and code blocks in the chat. The question this page answers is how to share that work as a page rather than as a transcript.

Sharing today

A chatgpt.com/share link sends the conversation. OpenAI's share-links FAQ is the source: on personal accounts, anyone with the URL can open it; in workspaces, sharing is limited to eligible members. That is a transcript, not a page. The recipient reads the chat rather than using the thing the model made. HaveTML publishes the HTML as a page at a link you control: private, unlisted or public. Unlisted and public links open without an account. Signed-in readers pin comments to the rendered page, and a new version lands behind the same link when you re-publish. Stay in ChatGPT when a conversation link or an in-chat code preview is enough.

Publish from ChatGPT desktop or ChatGPT web

ChatGPT desktop shares the Codex MCP config, so the same HaveTML server you connect for Codex can publish the HTML. ChatGPT web needs Business or Enterprise/Edu for write tools. The connect page has the Codex snippet. From the chat, copy the HTML out of the code block if you are not on a write-tools plan, then paste it into HaveTML as unlisted. Inline extra stylesheets first if the export split them. The file is the page. There is no canvas to keep alive on a legacy model for that send.

The short version

  • Yes. Choose HaveTML when the work has to be a page someone can open, comment on, and come back to at the same link.
  • Partial. Stay in ChatGPT when a conversation link or an in-chat code preview is enough, and nobody needs to leave the chat.

Where ChatGPT canvas is better

No setup at all, and code blocks preview HTML right inside the chat.

Share the HTML ChatGPT wrote

Copy the HTML out of the code block, publish it to HaveTML as unlisted, and send that link. From ChatGPT desktop, ask Codex to publish it over MCP.

Questions

Did OpenAI remove ChatGPT canvas?
Canvas left GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.5 Thinking on 28 May 2026. Paid users can still open it on legacy models until those models are sunset. OpenAI's own release notes are the source.
Is a ChatGPT share link the same as a page?
No. A share link is the conversation. HaveTML publishes the HTML as a page at a link you control.
Can I publish from ChatGPT itself?
ChatGPT desktop shares the Codex MCP config. ChatGPT web needs Business or Enterprise/Edu for write tools. The connect page has the setup.
Does HaveTML keep comments on the page?
Yes. Signed-in readers pin comments to the rendered page, and replies arrive without refreshing.
Is this a ChatGPT alternative?
No. ChatGPT writes the work. HaveTML publishes the HTML as a page. Use both: copy or publish from the code block when the recipient should open a page rather than the chat.
